Grumpy Monkey Don't Be Scared
Halloween is over, but it looks like we're not really done with Halloween books! This is part of a book series that never disappoints the readers.
This book, the first in a series of 22 (if I am correct) was one of my favorite classic chapter books I've read. Surprisingly, even after generations, this book gets the same love!
Title: Redwall (Book 1 in the series)
Author: Brian Jacques
Illustrator: Gary Chalk
Publisher: Firebird / Penguin Young Readers
An evil rat named Cluny the Scourge is attacking Redwall Abbey. He and his group ask the creatures of Redwall to surrender, but they refuse. Come whatever may, Cluny and his group, attack Redwall, but the peace-loving animals there repel this first attack! Still, Cluny doesn't admit failure and he climbs into the abbey using a beech tree. Unfortunately, Constance, a badger, sees this and knocks down the plank, pushing down Cluny and his soldiers. Still, Cluny doesn't accept failure and he promises not to return from such a war again!
The author has created a lovely medieval setting for this story. The characterization of Mathias, a little mouse, Constance, the fierce but old badger, and Cluny, who wishes to be indomitable, is brilliant!
At times, it is worth reading a book where the rationale and gestures are easily understood - this makes it quite obvious for us to know whom to applaud!
📚 A fast-paced action story that is very exciting.
📚 Lessons of courage, strength, and unity
📚 Perfect for kids ages 8+
