Title: Bitsy Bat, School Star
Author / Illustrator: Kaz Windness
Publisher: Simon & Schuster/Paula Wiseman Books
Bitsy Bat is excited and nervous for the first day of school. She wants to make some new friends at school, however, her ways don't fit the rules of the classroom. She can't hang upside-down and other kids dislike her lunch (bugs). Bitsy is feeling frustrated about the bright lights and loud sounds in the classroom. Finally, it leads to a meltdown and disliking school.
When Bitsy reaches home, her parents console her saying that she is perfect just the way she is and her differences make her special. This inspires Bitsy to go back to school and find a way to prove that differences are okay and they make us feel special.
📚 This is a beautiful story with a message for readers to accept the diversity in people and not to look down on them.
📚 Every young reader, autistic or not, will identify with most of Bitsy's feelings.
📚 Perfect for kids ages 5+
